A Russian night out

"Three days after our arrival was Valentine's Day and in true student style, we took any excuse we could to have a full English roast and a good old knees up. My flatmate Georgie invited her friend Sergei to join us. He brought rosé and roses making him a very welcome guest! We must have had a good time because we woke up to this printed notice on our front door: Dear Sirs, please be considerate of noise levels at evening and in the night. Thank you. Andrei."

We were barely a week in and already fulfilling the brits abroad stereotype. On our first Friday night, we started as we later proved to go on. Ellie got us an invite to a friend of a friend's flat on the Gribodeova Canal for a night out. The gathering was by no means a uni rave, but lump together a bunch of students with access to cheap vodka and a disproportionate love for the culture-shocking country they're in, fold the bed against the wall to make space for a boogie to a broken speaker, AND YOU'VE GOT YOURSELF A PARTY.

What then ensued was as expected - drinking until the Gribodeova living room morphed into the Union Bar dance-floor...Luckily our hangovers were cured by the cold Saint Petersburg air, as we had a nice afternoon stroll on the frozen-over river Neva, before a much needed burger for dinner.

Nights out in Saint Petersburg for beginners...

If you're looking for a trendy bar with room for a dance and good music, Union Bar is the place to start. A wide range of drinks and cocktails are on offer, burgers + fries are served til late and a different local DJ plays nearly every night. Expect music ranging from groovy disco to deep house and an absolutely rammed dance-floor on the weekends.
